Bastien und Bastienne is one of Mozart’s earliest operas, written when he was only twelve years old in the year 1768. It is a very simple work and features only three characters: Bastienne (soprano), Bastien (tenor) and the soothsayer Colas (bass). It is adapted from a play that was very popular in Vienna, “The Loves of Bastien and Bastienne,” a comic parody of a hit play by Jean Jacques Rousseau.
